There is no such thing as the ideal size of a group. Any fixed number will only apply to certain examples and not be universally true. The size of any group should be proportional to its task, i.e. the bigger the task the bigger the group.
Depending largely on the specific assignment and the field of work the group works in, the coordination effort required by a C/O varies. You must keep in mind that coordinating a big group will always become a heavy load on the C/O. In this case the C/O will designate a trusted member(s) as an X/O. Please note that subgroup/project coordination is not the only task of an X/O but just one of many possible duties a X/O may have to fulfill.
Delegating tasks to subgroup C/Os gives a groups C/O more time to focus on other administrative work that is needed, such as recruiting and leading by example, i.e. actually actively participating in achieving the groups goal in a way all members will see. Therefore it is generally advisable to stay below 10 active members of any single group and create subgroups if one exceeds that number.
