For most CA members, SOS didn't seem very active recently, however, looks can be deceiving.
With the arrival of new members this month, the structure of the brigade started to change slightly in the hope to bring more flexibility and more communication between members.
We've already noticed some more improvement and the motivation of members to participate in interesting new project ideas.

LTPR is getting into gear really good thanks to this (also see the other article about them), and RACAT is still doing a good job as well with continued research and other good idea's about auditing web apps. In general we are confident SOS is on the right track once again.

Public Projects

With the promotion of the new C/O of LTPR, we're expecting to bring a new breath to SpecOpSec.
More importantly, we're expecting to create a number of new projects this month (all security related) which will hopefully promote our activities to CA.

The key idea this month and in the future will be transparency and we will advertise all the activities and projects in SOS. This has been neglected in the past but this time we'll try to make projects public through the recruitment forum or using the /projects system.
And with the rediscovery of an old SVN repository for LTPR on ca.net and a group of really motivated people we will have everything needed to start.

And for those of you with more interest in RACAT, there is a web application auditing group in the project tree as well.

Structure

Trying to re-vitalize the brigade means doing some re-organization.
That's why we decided to merge Short-Term Projects and LTPR to be able to share ideas more easily and for more flexibility in the management of our members. We will probably decide on a new and more generic name for the group, but this is not the priority.

Recruitment and advertising

Our application process will change slightly in the near future due to some planned changed in the application form, as there were some outdated/not really relevant questions. Of course with all our activity in /projects, and SOS in general, you can expect to see us more active on the side of recruiting, as well as on all forums in general. We hope that the above mentioned "more transparency" will also add to more interest in SOS by other people, as they get to know more about what we are doing.

When will you join us?

Special thanks go out to sefo, who wrote most of this.
