We all love a good challenge, and the chance to prove to our friends that we actually have some ability. So if you're procrastinating(like me) try out the sites below. Be aware all of the sites below require that you sign up for an account.
We all love a good challenge, and the chance to prove to our friends that we actually have some ability. So if you're procrastinating(like me) try out the sites below. Be aware all of the sites below require that you sign up for an account. This is mostly due to needing to track your progress through the challenges.

The first, and my personal favorite at the moment, is the Sered Challenge. It has a good mix of storyline and puzzle. Lots of time has been spent making this series of challenges not only relevant, but also entertaining. This site has been doing challenges since 99 and they know their stuff. It also has a great community that you can get involved with. Well worth the time to check out.

The OSIX.net GEEK Challenges are the perfect way to prove to your friends that you are a geek (is that a good thing?). You can show off your programming skills and buy rewards after passing different levels. Plenty of tutorials and other goodies. More importantly most of these challenges don't force you to work in the language that they like, so whether you're a perl guru or a java wizard you can still have fun with these challenges.

HackThisSite.org Hacking Challenges is probably one of the most well known hacking challenges, the skills required to break these challenges are usually considered to be dark (black hat skills).

Net Force Challenges from the netherlands has a good range of different challenges both security and general computing related.

I've left two of the biggest challenge sites on the net till last. The Hackers Lab has a nice set of challenges that can be accessed over Telnet. They are based on faked back-doors and exploits but at least give the illusion of reality.

hackergames.net: CHALLENGE++ has a large number of challenges(140+), plus plenty of other content such as wargames & tutorials. It is one of the biggest challenge sites, and well worth the effort of signing up.

Finally we have NGSECs web authentication challenges; these challenges are quite old now, but still relevant. Take a look. So there you have it, a few sites to test your skill and waste your time. Bet you can't beat them all!
