Feedback Digest - November 2006.
Feature Requests
  • Email notification of cMS: We received another request to enable email notification of new cMS messages, and possibly responses to forum threads. At present, this will not be implemented, primarily due to the email load it would place on the server. However, we'd like to note that if you use an IRC client that supports scripts, you can easily log in to ZebServ on CA-IRC, and write a small script to email yourself whenever ZebServ alerts that you have a new cMS.
  • WAP/Pocket PC Layout: This suggestion was to implement a wap/wap2/pocket pc version of the website for anyone using mobile devices. Although we would like to implement this, it is currently felt that we do not have the resources to spend on this project, and effort will be concentrated elsewhere. Hopefully this will be addressed in the future.
  • X509 Certs: "Have a space to upload and share X509 certs from CAcert or other places." Currently no action will be taken on this. However if you really want to see this implemented in some form, send your ideas in - the more people requesting a feature then the more likely it is to be implemented!
  • Multiple text markup support: "Allow people to choose among BBCode, Textile, (Restricted) HTML, Markdown etc. via a textbox on every form." At this time, Staff has decided that there are certain aspects of dinah (the CyberArmy site) that need to be developed further before this is implemented. Additionally it was felt that there does not tend to be a need to use BBCode on the site. cMS and forum posts tend to use basic BBCode tags like bold/italics/color/list, and there is little difference between the markup languages.
Bug Reports
  • Top menu broken?: Some users noticed problems with the display of the CyberArmy header around the middle of November. It had indeed been broken by an update that was attempting to resolve header issues for visitors using low resolutions. We undid the update and the header is now back to normal!
  • Search Feature: The 'search' link in the CA header was sending users to a page stating "You do not have permission to view the results". This is because that area of the site went offline after a hosting change some time ago. We have removed that item from the CA header for the time being; the feature will be returning, but the members usually involved in this area are very busy at present. If you would be interested in helping set up this feature, please let me know (cMS icklenewt). The search site is in PHP with a mySQL database and is primarily a 'spider'/site crawler.
  • SNEAK Update: A member reported that sneaksvnupdate was not taking the Windows carriage return into account. In the end this appeared to be an SVN RSS issue.
  • Sered Alpha Level: One member (and probably a few who are staying quiet!) was concerned the first level of Sered was broken. I am happy to let you all know that the level is fully functional - you all just need to look a bit harder!!
  • IRC Applet Not Working: A few of you are having problems with the site IRC applet. At present we have not been able to correct this problem but we are aware of it. Until it is fixed, where possible we suggest you use an IRC client or other web clients (CGI IRC).
Other/Miscellaneous
  • Skills Set: One member sent in a request to add AJAX to the skills list. It has now been added. If there are skills you think are missing from the list, feel free to send in your suggestions via Feedback.
  • CA 2002 Archive Corrupt: It was reported that the CA archive 2002 in /files/fun was corrupt. A few of the feedback team checked it out and haven't had any problems. If you find issues with this or any other file on the site then please do let us know.
  • Help!!!: OK, don't panic!! This was a request for help on choosing a brigade to join. We contacted the Recruit Guidance Project, who followed up on it and gave advice to the member. If you have any questions about CyberArmy or need help, feel free to either contact the Recruit Guidance Project, or send your questions in via Feedback.
  • Fix the SSL cert!: The site SSL certification has expired, so no doubt many of you have been getting warnings about this! An Exec will be addressing this soon.
Thank you for all your feedback - every submission is considered and discussed. Please expect to wait anything up to a few weeks to receive details regarding the outcome of your feedback.

Remember, if you wish to be contacted in response to your feedback, or are requesting assistance, ensure contact details are enclosed.
