Picasa started out as a digital photo organizer produced by a company with the same name. In July 2004, Google bought Picasa from Idealab, and now offers it for download. Picasa is very easy to install and use.

After installation, when you first run it, Picasa catalogs all the media files from your computer, but you can choose to add them manually, using the "Import" option. Photos can be organized into albums, which can be further organized into collections. Picasa doesn't modify the original photo file, but saves the changes you made to the file into a different folder.

Picasa has a lot of editing features which, besides standard items such as "Rotate clockwise" or "Zoom", with Picasa you can also create collages, small-length movies, posters, or CD's. The "basic fixes" options allow you to crop or straighten a photo, or eliminate red-eye from it. The "Tuning" box has options to modify the light levels in photos with the "Fill light" button, and also color temperature. There are twelve types of "effects", and if you mouse over an "Effect" icon, information about the icon will appear. For example, the "Warmify" effect tells you "Improves skin tones by boosting warm tones", and for the "Graduated Tint" effect, you have "A graduated filter, useful for skies".

Although Picasa has not a lot of options compared to other basic photo editing software, it is, in my opinion, an easy to use, fun software.
