    Hey,

    I was recently trying to get Mandrake working on a Dell Inspiron 8000. While doing so it just couldn't recognise my screen ... That leaves me now without X. Does anyone know how to configure it well, or what the exact settings should be for an inspiron8000 ?

    thanks,
    - Ciri

      Linux on Laptops is a great resource in general for (oddly enough ;)) installing Linux on laptops, and they have about 20 different articles there for your model, many of which seem to talk about the video issue.

        Thanks, in the end I fixed it by installing a wrong driver, following a tutorial on that website :) but it gave me the chance to start X and download the correct ones though. Again, thanks !

          It can be (if you're not just comparing the "LCD screen speed" ;) ). It depends on a lot of factors and the fact is you can have more control over them under Linux than under Windows.
          I won't give you a full list of all the stuff that can allow you to have a faster system under Linux, but here are a few things :
          - you can compile the kernel with the options you want, enabling what's needed, throwing away unnecessary stuff...this can help ;
          - you have the choice of a window manager and, thus, can choose a minimal one to gain speed ;
          - you can compile applications using settings that will perfectly "fit" your computer ;
          - etc.
          In a word, as with many other open-source products, you're FREE to make it a faster OS.

          Sorry for being so "short" about this huge subject.

          As far as I can see. Seems to be running as fast (or maybe slightly faster) than WinXP. Nothing really noticable though...
