Hello everyone. My name is Jörg Lübbert and I've been around this site for many years and have helped the CA for 2 years.
As you might have heard already, I'm developing a Linux distribution. Having released a couple of experimental versions I now have an exact idea on what to do and where to go for the future. But in order to achieve my aims, and maybe yours, I need you! Or in other words the Linux community needs you
Let me describe this project.
The Linux distribution is called Kaladix Linux and its main aim is security for servers while maintaining good customizability and developer friendlyness. This makes it unlike any other distribution which makes it very interesting. Here are some charecteristics of the distro that is planned:
- Based on Gentoo Linux portage system "emerge"
- Installable from packages, sources or both mixed
- 4 branches for you to use, testing, unstable, stable and trusted (like Debian)
- Extensive security with ACLs
- Integrated cryptography
- Flexible, Small, not for newbies
- The only developer friendly, secure and customizable distribution around
If you want to know more about it you should check out www.kaladix.org/docs/information.shtml, www.debian.org (just for the idea with the branches), www.gentoo.org (for their portage system)
What's in for you?
Easy: You can learn more about the Linux OS, enhance your programing skills and do something good for the community. What more could you ask for? Money you say? See it like this, if you train your programing skills by helping this project your chances to become a very well payed programer rise
How would joining this project look like?
You will get access to the website according to your needs. The website will be the central point of development. It will not only contain basic information and documents about Kaladix Linux but also full sources/binaries via FTP/Rsync and CVS. If you will create packages for Kaladix then you would get access to the complete source tree via CVS for example. Oh, and I just received the new server from UPS. Athlon XP 1600 with 512MB DDRAM. Let the compiling begin ;)
And what has to be done? or, who is needed?
In short everyone ;)
To be more accurate:
- Webdesigner
- Python scripter
- C/C++ coder
- Bash scripter
- >=Medium knowledgable Linux users
- Network administrators (mirrors and such)
- Server administrators (mirrors and such)
- People that know people
- People with knowledge about security
- People with experience of CVS
- People with experience of project managment
- And all other kind of geeks ;)
Some example tasks would be:
- Hacking support for online packages into gentoo's emerge
- Creating Installer
- Creating ISO images
- Creating a package for program X
- There's a lot to be done actually ;)
Well what's left to say for me...
I really hope that some of you will be interested and want to do something good for the community. Even if you're not a pro your help is needed, learning by doing is the best you can do :)
