I presume what you are thinking of is an acoustic modem - these are quite out-of-date now tho, and to be honest I'm not sure they would still work (and if they did would be very slow!!!)

Maybe try something more recent - wifi hotspots are a good start. Like the ones that you get in service stations, and stuff - the ones you pay to access the internet through your own laptop - try some dns tunnelling to get a free connection.

Or try and hack some of these stand-alone interent kiosk things - although i suspect the trick to these would be more on the credit side of things (see how people hack video games and stuff in arcades for ideas on this).

Note: This is just my random thoughts on things, and I in no way am encouraging you to actally break the law!!! Just to learn!
