Results:
- Use GA - 17
- No tracking - 3
- Alternative - 1
Due to the results we will have GA on the site. However, I plan for this to be reviewed after a couple of months. If the info gained has not been put to good use (for improving the site) then we'll remove GA at that time. We should also revote on this issue regularly. I don't think we necessarily need to keep GA on the site and that is why I want to review it regularly so we only track for as long as we will actively use the stats for improvement to CA.net.
Any further discussion on the issue should be taken to the members forum, or sent in via feedback.
Thanks everyone,
~ickz~

We can try to map figures to understand how much new traffic we get - so do we need to advertise, or are we simply not managing to keep people once they get here? I'm sure the data could be useful in many other ways too - but basically I intend for it to be used for purposes of reviewing and improving the site.

We are a privacy conscious community and I would not want this site to infringe on your privacy. While we shall only use the standard version of GA (no tweaking to store more info in cookies etc), this does record referrers, location, where you browse on the site, and when. We have no intention of reading the cookies that GA stores - they will only be used by GA for the stats it records. Therefore no details will be mapped against your account.

I know that Google has become buddies with the open source community. They (at least the claim to) keep your privacy in high priority, etc.
However, I am also a Google shareholder. I know that the company's profit margin is growing at an exponential rate. I remember once upon a time when companies like Amazon, Yahoo!, and even Microsoft were so trusted by the community.
I am not comparing Google to these companies, I believe that they are truly different, however, this data stays with them, and not with us. We do not have the legal council to defend ourselves should Google ever decide to do something more sinister with the data that they have collected.
I would much rather trust in ourselves (as long as Dinah remains open source) to perform this kind of analysis.
Of course... we still have that issue with a lack of programmers. I would go for "B" before "A" though. If there was a system such as analytics that we could download and implement ourselves, that would be a different story.
Respectfully,

I'm surprised we aren't already using GA tbh.
GA is also good for seeing what search terms are used to find the website and we could use this to add to the meta tags or around the website to increase hits.
A lot of people find us via the IRC server so if we could make this more accessible/obvious on the website that would be great but making sure they find IRC through the website instead of through IRC websites which list us.
I suppose members shouldn't be worried about GA being used on the website as they would have visited websites in their browsing time on the internet which use it and be unknown to them. It's just great that you are letting them know that it is being used.
