RE: It's BROKEN though! |

![]() ![]() Lambda ViceCinC Enstyne No, just that no skilled coders have found that the forums are broken enough for them to go submit patches for it. They have better things to create, they arn't simply "ordered" to go code something. Also our backend is very unique. This is a substantial problem for anyone wanting to port another forum on top of dinah's architecture. For one it would have to be in perl, which immeadiately limits the selection of forum software that is portable. Alternatively API wrappers for dinah would have to be written for another language i.e. PHP including the actual porting of the software. Whether this begs the question if CA's unique backend is a disadvantage is another topic though. Also there's a certain effect I always perceive in systems with user interfaces where the people with little knowledge of the underlying infrastructure want changes (in any form). A lot of the little things build up to perform complicated overlapping sets features, in this case it may be the groupware 'topology' and how that interacts with brigades/projects etc, to state a simple example. How things look and the way it 'just works' doesn't accurately reflect what is going on underneath or the complexity involved in achieving it... especially if you've become accustomed to it. Perhaps someone who's good with other forum software can pull out the source of Forum.pm from the svn trunk and give us some sort of analysis on how easy the features would be to port? Anyway, I personally don't see any problems with the current system. There's room for improvement, there always is, but I don't see why it should just be replaced entirely - especially when we need to start concentrating on bigger fish to fry.
