    Anyone had any issues with a dvd/cd drive disappearing under windows vista?
    My friend's laptop just had this happen, it no longer appears in my computer or the device manager. I haven't looked closely but I'm sure it's still seen in the bios but I will have to look closer. Just thought I'd check here because I have found a lot on google about people with the same type of issue but none of the listed fixes seem to work.

      I havent had any hardware issues with Vista as of yet. *knock on wood*

      Have you taken the drive out and then back in - going through the Add New Hardware wizard to see if its recongnized. Maybe the drive is broken? I would imagine if its hooked up - bios would still read it even if it is broken?

      Take the drive to a electronic store and have them test it to assure it works. Im not sure where your located but in the US...most chain electronic stores will do this for free.

        Drive doesn't even appear to be recognized by BIOS. This laptop is just screwed now.. it's one of those acer pieces of garbage. Won't even do a factory reset without shutting off because battery dies altho the AC power cord is plugged in and working.
        Apparently cd/dvd drive and other hardware issues are common with acers so I'm just gonna tell my room mate to take this in to where he bought it and let them deal with it.

          I had the same problem and I fixed it in the REG open go to
          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
          and Delete the upper and lowers in the file then refresh it should fix your problem. Latz

          The common issue of optical drives disappearing within Vista is usually a registry issue. There are two keys that can cause it.

          Note: If the drive is operational (i.e. works fine with a bootable live distro CD) then this fix will work.

          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Control > Class

          Arrow down through the keys lists in the left pane watching the top entries in the right pane. The one your looking for will be labeled as "DVD/CD-ROM drives" in the (Default) key of the right pane. Within that directory you want to locate and delete two keys. "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters". Reboot. Open "Computer" - formally "My Computer" - and the drive should magically reappear.

          Hope this helps!
