      Hi,

The troubleshooting is done according to the OS. But generally, lower speed boot up occurs when there are lots of Hardware or Lots of deamons to load. So it is always better you select only the needed deamons (services) to auto start.

      # This should be the main cause for your problem... . If it doesn't work, please post this in the GNU Forum. All the best.. . #

OH MY GOD !!! OH MY GOD !!! YOU KNOW WHAT? I`m HAVING AN EMOTIONALY ORGASM :D :D :D
IM SO HAPPY AND I DON`T KNOW WHERE TO START :D

Okay, Fedora sucks a little bit too much i found out! (Sorry to all Fedora Users) THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR RECOMENDING ME PCLINUXOS! This Operating System is some mother******* awesome piece of code! You may think now this is a n00b OS, but yeah you are right! Perfect for Linux newbies like me!

After downloading a copy of PCLinuxOS yesterday and executing the installation i realized that the window effects aint ran smooth. So i thought i should download latest nvidia videocard driver. (i always failed doing a vc update in Fedora, SuSe or Mandrake)
BUT THIS TIME IT WORKED! All i did was login as Root, did tty1, did init 3, sh installed it AND THAT WAS IT! My first sucessfull driver installation with Linux! Just great!

I got the cube desktop effects running now and they work just fine!
I would say it`s better than Vista`s Aero because Beryl takes less resources and looks tenthousand times better than. And i also found out that doing this Video Card driver update reduces Boot Time! It took 45 seconds before and 25 seconds after the update.

Currently i`m trying to get my wLan connection to work with MADWIFI

For me, this is the best Operating System for Newbies i`m going to learn that and move on to Ubuntu after that.

AT THIS POINT: Thank you very much guys for all your answers!!!

...Beryl is indeed very amazing. I tried it today as well on Mint 3.1 Beta.

        Good luck!

Why is Linux so slow, i just installed it new!
Can i shut down any services on startup? Or Something?
Or is that Standard Linux Boot Time -.-

Hmmm... could you be a but more specific? Which Linux distribution did you install? Does it run smoothly once it's booted?

          Hello there!

Here some Components of my Computer:
          ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe Motherboard
          AMD Athlon XP 3200+
          1024 MB RAM
nVidia GeForce 6800 128 MB Videocard
So not a bad System at all.

I`m using Fedora 7 at the moment.
I`ve also tried some SuSE and Mandrake Versions some months ago, but it was always the same: Boot time 3 minutes and more
WITH WINDOWS XP i can watch a good DVD (on second TFT screen), Play MP3`s with winamp, run office 2007, and play a game like LOKI at 1024 x 768 with no problem, at the same time.
WITH LINUX it`s enough to play a standard distribition game like TuxRacer.
          But it runs smoothly.

Is anyone using Fedora or another Distrib.?
and how long does your boot time take?

Did you ever try Ubuntu or any of its variant? I was personally never bothered by linux booting times, but maybe it's just me. Big distros normally tend to be slower to boot.

To make the transition from Windos XP to Linux smoother, try PCLinuxOS (kinda Mandriva-based) or Linux Mint (Ubuntu-based). And TRY THE LIVE CD FIRST!!!

Its slower because on default builds of linux they compile into the kernel support for just about all known hardware types. Most distros allow a facility to recompile the kernel with ease. I don't know about Defora though as I havent used that one. For a faster boot and smoother operation at run time you should recompile the kernel though. One build in the modules for the hard ware you need to support. You should also turn off any servers that you may have installed by default. i.e web, databases...

                AWWWWW Thank you :D

I heard about recompile a kernel, so i find out how to do that an try that in Fedora. And if that dont work i will install PCLINUXOS OMFG THIS SHIT ROCKS :-O :-O :-O :-O I SAW VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE AND THIS LOOKS THOUSAND TIMES BETTER THAN ANY WINDOWS

While, I have the upmost respect for dopel, and he knows what he is talking about, there is something else to do before you start messing around with recompiling the kernal.

I run Fedora on my laptop and I can tell you that my start up time is comparable to windows XP. However, what happens at startup is a shed-load of services gets started. If one of these services is having a problem starting, it can take a while to fail. In 95% of cases where someone has complained of slow startup times it is because one or more services are timing out at startup.

When fedora boots there is a button that says "details" or something like that (I usually just hibernate my laptop rather than rebooting which I do very very infrequently). Press this button and you should see a black window, and a line printed against each service that has started. It should say [OK] (i think) in green when a service starts successfully, and [FAILED] in red if the service fails to start. Reboot and do this, make a note if any services fail. Even if they all start ok, make a note of any that take a long time to start. Then come back to this thread with the details.

Recompiling the kernal will probably not help a great deal, most hardware support is provided as kernal modules these days, which are only added if you need them (based on hardware detection). Also, recompiling the kernal will become a pain in the ass when you come to install updates, as the kernal may be updated. There may be a small performance improvement from having the kernal build for your specific hardware, from the source... but you can measure it in milliseconds mostly.... it is known as the 'gentoo fallacy' ;)

Hung services probably will cause significantly more delay. I guess a lot more hardware has gone to kernel modules since the last time I recompiled one. Work has admittingly confined to a windows env and my debian dev box does not get the attention in my spare time it once did :( This makes me sad... going to pun in the corner now.

I noticed in one of your earlier posts that you talk about playing games and watching DVDs etc. All this is possible on Linux but please understand that while things are moving forward, Linux is not quite as 'multimedia' capable as Windows at this point. Portioning blame for all this stuff is a whole other topic, but despite what many Linux people will tell you, it is not quite as good as Windows for multimedia, and MS office is still a bit better from a usability perspective than Open Office.

That said... Linux is far and away a better platform for any kind of serious computing, and it is passable as a media platform, but hasn't quite caught up with windows just yet.
