I agree that people should not just jump into linux cos it's the "in thing". I disagree however with the idea that linux should not become a desktop OS. Linux has one distinct advantage as a desktop OS, that is that it costs exactl $0 to get a decent system up (barring any download costs etc). Windows costs a lot of money. The options for people who can't afford it are pirate windows or use linux. There applications for linux both as a desktop os and a server os. If you want to set up a good server then you probably shouldn't be using a distribution like redhat which is full of the so called "crapware". For servers there are some very good distributions such as debian and e-smith. The fact that desktop apps are being developed for linux will not stop people from making ther servers as well. I am sure the developers of apache have no interest in dropping the project and working on kde for example.

Linux is a great OS for pretty much anything if you can get used to thinking at a level greater than say... 8 years old. I agree that people who fear the shell shoould probably not use linux just yet, however i see no reason not to try and make it so they can.
