UNIX and its derivitives are not desktop operating system's. They are, as XC noted, designed to be workstations and servers. There is a lot of the anger in the Linux community becasue of the recent trend that seems to be tring to bring Linux to the common desktop. ie to replace Joe Schmoe's $1,000 e-mail and quake machine running some variant of MS Windows. As a result of this Linux distro's are getting slam packed with tons of crapware applications to make doing something that was already possible point and click friendly so Joe Schmoe wont be 'afraid' of Linux. I want Joe Schmoe to be afraid of Linux. What was wrong with MS Windows? I run a seperate win2k box for all my multimedia and gaming needs. This was an OS designed for such things. Windows wasnt developed to be a server or secure, stable, programming friendly, environment, but it does offer all the bells and whistles gamers and average internet users need. My win2k box almot never crashes, despite the mass of ignorant protests I hear(maybe 3x in 3yrs). I know how to use Windows well enough to tweak it and get it stable. If you cant keep Windows from taking a nose dives then I can well imagine you Linux box will be unstable, EXTREMELY insecure even compared to Windows, and bloated with tons of apps that will never be used. If the thought of a shell scares you then perhaps installing Linux is a bad idea. What is Linux going to give you that you need? Perhaps you should just get a shell on a friends box and play around untill you are comfortable with Linux. Perhaps you may realize 'wow, theres no way in hell I will ever be able to play CS 2007 Turbo Edition on this box'. Linux was designed for development and internet services, not for using StarOffice and playing UT. This drive towards pushing Linux to replace Windows Desktop environment is pushing Linux to an inevitable death. Linux replacing mid-range Windows and UNIX servers is what the goal should be amd even then there are times when Linux just is not the best solution. Linux was designed so that the average person that didnt have access to a UNIX system could still reap the benefits of is features on a affordable PC. Its the hackers* OS and it should always remain this. If you dont have the desire to dig deep into the OS and truely take advantage of its wonderful design and wealth of development tools and network services then stay way. The sign on the front of my Linux box says "Geeks Only". EOF
