linux choices |

![]() Tr bizzaro ive searched throught the other threads in this forum re: choices of linux and i see several strong opinions about diff versions. well, i recently had a situation at wrk that i solved by calling in some outside help. they will be here today to fix my damn network, i hope. this brought to my attention a glearing weakness in me re: ntwrking in general. the weakness is, i suck! so now that i can concentrate on my normal wrkload, im starting to daydream about projects i can do at home to bolster my skills. network 101 might be a start for me. also read the article in our zzine re: the future windows "palladium"? that put a bit of a scare into me, so an alt o/s looks better all the time. i wanted to build a linux server since i saw it in maxpc magazine a cpl months ago so im laying the groundwork now. i have a box at home that i want to convert to a linux os and use as a server so i can experiment at home with networking. maybe host my own ftp or mirror for something ( like folding or linux )or some web pages or sum such. another project will be my first mult o/s system, but thats later. i went to linuxiso.org to d/ld and was presented with a hundred flavors. help! i think i have it narrowed down to suse, redhat, or debian. keeping in mind im a linux n00b and will probably be breaking and fixing this box constantly while learning, which flavor is right for me? the box it will run on is an amd 1800 with 256mb of pc 133, a 32meg vid card. mobo is undecided at this time, prob a cheapo or ebay special. if i find limited use for my own server, i would like the o/s to be flexible enough to become an alt app/game platform without changing the linux distribution until i at least have some basic linux skills. so i guess what i need is an easily installable, gentle learning curve, full featured, flexable o/s. maybe one that comes with hookers and a cocktail? im reading through the linuxiso forums now, but tons of info to sift through. help and direction appreciated.
