what have ppl got to say about gentoo?

I am a begginer but not a newbie with linux (i.e. I know how to RTFM).

I am considering gentoo, because I want to have a customised system but before I d/l I was wondering what people had to say about the install (hardware etc) and the package management from a beginners perspective.
