Radeon 9700 in linux/gcc 3

Yeah yeah i know you all say nvidia is best for linux but i have a radeon so meh. I wanna have it work with 3d in linux but the driver only supports gcc2 and i have gcc3. Firstly, even though the kernel whinges when you try to install the module which was made for gcc2, has anybody tried it and had it work anyway? Also, if i build a kernel in gcc2 then use it when all my programs/libraries are compiled with gcc3? (i have another machine i can build the kernel on).
