Personally,

I would say the best OS is what ever OS you feel most comfortable with. For a workstation I prefer windows 2000 and for a server I prefer FreeBSD or some variant of Linux. I would take the time to fiddle with as many Operating Systems as you can and make your own choice. :) and remember that just because you fiddled with one distro of Linux doesn't mean they are all the same. Every Distrobution of Linux has their on quirks so I would play with as many of them as possible. :)
