Well, I spoke from my own experience. :) Real modem works a lot better than WinModem on near any of OS. Also, I find that an external modem runs faster and able has more k (bytes?) per second than what WinModem can get.

BTW: An external modem that I used to have was U.S. Robotic external modem.
