Well, if you use XP to access the internet, i'm guessing debain has no internet access. Correct? How do you have the machines set up? Dual boot, VMWare, etc? You can set up NAT if you are using VMWare and it should work, but if it's a dual boot you are going to need to get Debain access to the internet. If debain is on its own box then connecting shouldn't even be an issue.
