RE: MICROSOFT SUPER HIDDEN FILES??????? |

![]() Ker highwaystar >has anybody heard of these so-called Super Hidden Files? They are filesthat list every URL you have ever visited and every download you have ever made!!!!They serve no known purpose, although Microshit tries to say that it is some sort of history list (yeah right). These files are inaccessable except in DOS, so we would never find them because hey, who uses DOS anymore, right??? (Hackers do you Microshit morons!!) hmmm, sounds like we have a problem with MS. have you looked into other OSs? the file you're thinking of, index.dat, is just a dumpfile for urls related to your IE cookies. i don't know why you can't open it except from DOS; i have mine open in notepad as we speak. however, if it bothers you that much, you can wipe it clean or delete it entirely. whether it's advisable or not, that much i'm unsure of - if you delete it, you do so at your own peril. >There is also an interesting little program called FIND FAST under Control Panel that has almost no functionality except to keep track of every single file on your computer with any text (it neglects binary files as far as I know, someone else can check because I removed the frickin' thing).Note that when you use this hunk of crap it grinds your HD to hell and possibly attempts to connect to the internet in some hidden way (can't be sure of this but I've heard rumors).I wonder if they might be trying to have your own computer mail every frickin' thing you have ever done to some giant Microshit Database???No idea, could just be paranoia. yeah, definitely protests too much - someone set the this dude up with a unix-variant :) find fast is typically installed with microsoft office. since i haven't had office on my own computer lately, i don't remember everything about it. it's supposed to work like the indexing service on Win2K/XP, except that it only tracks Office files so that it can find/retrieve them faster (hence the name ;)). however, i found both of these to be memory hogs, so i've deactivated or removed them entirely. >Anyways, if anyone has anything to add or knows anything about this crap drop us a line.Everyone deserves to know. done. >P.S. there should be some sort of program out there to remove these bloody things, I will try to find it and let you all know, unless I find out that the removal program is actually a "trigger" that sends off these bloody files to Microshit headquarters. set up a personal firewall, and none of your programs will talk to MS unless you permit them to. as for finding/removing weird stuff in windows, googling for stuff will provide a ton of info. for instance, this page, despite its aol.com host and generally-frightening web design, makes a good starting point. peace -highwaystar Replies:
