Its slower because on default builds of linux they compile into the kernel support for just about all known hardware types. Most distros allow a facility to recompile the kernel with ease. I don't know about Defora though as I havent used that one. For a faster boot and smoother operation at run time you should recompile the kernel though. One build in the modules for the hard ware you need to support. You should also turn off any servers that you may have installed by default. i.e web, databases...
