The PDC is running Samba, and all of the computers are imaged using Ghost; so they should have fairly consistent configurations, but I can't be certain. I'll check the "hotfix levels" tomorrow.

>>Roaming Profiles are currently being used,
>*Mandatory* roaming profiles ?

The profiles in question aren't mandatory.

>>but this problem occurs inconsistently from machine-to-machine. The same account can access the site in some places but not others,

>By "inconsistently", do you mean that the same account on the same box will not always behave the same ? (just login/logout on the same box with the same user)
>Or, is it that when it starts not working for one user on one box it doesn't work again the next time(s) the same user logs in on the same box ?
>

Currently, the account will work on one machine but the same profile (not modified) will not necessarily work on another. Today, the profile was working consistently on the same machine (I log in and create the profile and pull it down; it works; log out and upload to the server; delete profile cache; log back in). Thurs. and Fri. that wasn't necessarily the case as it broke the second time I logged in.

>>and it occurs with various websites like the Microsoft Office ClipArt Gallery and the New York Times.
>Are there some websites that need (or just create without really needing them) cookies with which you never have any problem ?

I haven't actually checked on this, but I will; it happens with several websites consistently. As the same users have been having trouble with the same websites.

>A common drawback when spending too much time on the same problem is your view of it often narrows to the only complicated stuff you don't need to know about (if you get what I mean). The 'trick' is to make one step back, do something else and then come back to it as a 'virgin' with the magical 'K.I.S.S.' principle in mind. (ok, this won't solve your problem, but it can help staying sane)

I'm going to take a day off the problem and try again b/c I have kinda got burned out on it. I've tried so many things it's getting hard to determine what I have already done (who needs documentation anyway :-P).

>>I've cleaned registries; I've created and reset a test profile multiple times, but I can't seem to hit it on the head.
>On a new box, with a new user (thus, a new profile) : are cookies created (the first time) ?

Yes, and from what I can tell the "broken" boxes actually receive the cookie from the HTTP server (last week), but today, the broken boxes haven't been receiving any cookies. I pretty much have to step back and re-asses everything to give you more accurate details.

>Naive steps to the headache (if you've got time) :

>on a box where cookies don't seem to be created, set IE's home page to "about:blank", "install" (i.e. : copy) FileMon from Sysinternals, login as the user you're using for your tests, run FileMon with runas (as local admin), wait, filter out every app. you don't need to know about in FileMon (right-click, exclude process, loop), fire up IE like the user would do it, clear FileMon log (note : repeat the whole process again without this step if you don't find any failure), type the address of a site that needs cookies in the address bar and press [ENTER], login (on the site) or do whatever is supposed to create a cookie, save FileMon's log, search for failures in the log...any ? What directory ? User's profile ?

Yeah, I was thinking about doing some file monitoring, but I didn't know of a good utility. I'll try FileMon.

>...mmmh...Other questions :
>- are profiles cached on (some of) the computers ?

Yes, XP caches the last 5 logins, I think. I've been clearing profiles from the testing computers frequently and in different situations.

>- what are the permissions on the user's profile directory when you can't taste these nice chocolate cookies web sites prepared for you ? (check with attrib too);

User has full control in Windoze; I've even gone as far to set the permissions on the server to 777.

>- did you try with FireFox ? (note : I'm just asking if you tried, I'm not telling you to switch to FF...there's a difference) ;

You don't have to tell ME to switch :-) I haven't fully tested Firefox, but it has worked with one or two of the sites in question, and I have no reason to believe it wouldn't work otherwise. I've put it forward as a temporary workaround until I can get this problem figured out.

Thanks for your help, and I'm probably going to try out FileMon tomorrow.
