Not sure why they quoted '..' in:

# rm /etc/make.profile
# ln -s ../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux//2004.3 /etc/make.profile


..when /root may not be root's home. I had once thought the Gentoo team was competent but they are disappointing me more and more these days. (Esp. since Daniel left)

Don't get me wrong, Gentoo is the only OS on my desktop machine and has been for well over a year, but there are parts of it I have come to dislike and the attitude/direction of developers is not one that I admire.

I will get around to LFS one of these days... ;)

PS. I have begun writing a package management system in Bash and it is fairly functional already. I've started on some init scripts too. Also, unlike Gentoo, my GNU/Linux system will be completely FHS compliant and absolutely secure by default.
