...but i DID find a intel 536ep winmodem (yea another winmodem, it scared me too) and intel has linux drivers for it on their site :)

yea...so...if you are ever looking for a good winmodem that runs under nix, intel has the nix drivers (two or three different distros AND generic) right under the windows drivers...or you could just buy a real modem (if your not cheap like me :P)
