You need to do check for file consistancy. If it can boot to command prompt, do that, and see if you can do a roll back (if he has one to go to). If that doesn't work, or you can't find a file checker, then Doey is right, it's b0rked. Try to save the registry if you can. Copy his /documents and settings/ information in total to your harddrive, copy his /program files/ as well if you have space, and any other files he needs off there that may not be in either of those.

Format, re-install, copy all back... if you have the registry and programs in tact, most programs shouldn't know the difference. If you can't get the registry, then some programs will need to be re-installed. But, with his documents and settings restored, it should "feel" like the original setup. You just have to go through the gigantic re-install of all MS patches, which could take several hours even on a cable modem.

But, if you can salvage registry/personal files/programs, format and re-install is pretty simple, and I've had to do it many times... makes for a great way to wipe the slate clean if you have to go through all your files you want and what you don't. :) Alas, if you and he only have 40GB harddrives, and both are near full, it may be time to delete the old porn/mp3's. ;)

BTW, make a Knoppix CD for him if that ever happens again. http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html This will allow him to boot his own computer and work on his harddrive for when it crashes. Knoppix = muy-leet-nix-ware, and after a couple boots with that, he may just say bye bye to XP altogether. ;) Knoppix is a Debian based package, and I've booted it on several desktops, and a laptop. The slowest desktop I have gotten it to boot to is a 100 Mhz Pentium-I with 32MB ram that used a TV as a monitor, so it's pretty damn robust for a Live CD OS.
