I have that problem when I try to increase the size beyond my monitors capabilities, just it doesn't freeze. I'm running win98 so that may be the reason for not freezing. When I do the same thing in Linux, I get similar results. So make sure your monitor supports the resolution you are trying. If it does, then I'll go with the others and say it's the drivers.
