Really the only way I know to get troublesome hardware to work is to build a kernel specifically for it, and newer chips often provide the full functionality of their predecessors - so try forcing an older kernel driver in.

You might have trouble with the graphics chip ?? - and need to compile X again with some patches ?? or extra drivers ??

(just mashed SuSE 8.2 into VIA EPIA-M10000 (unsupported chipset) - is it worth the effort !)
