You could maybe recompile the kernel for your processor type and while your there uncheck any options you think you might not use.

My desktop (for now) is an AMD K6-2 450mhz with 128M of ram, KDE in Slackware 8.1 ran okay with the windows leaving some trailers when moved but nothing to moan about. KDE in Slack 9.0 on the otherhand runs pretty slow, like when you move the mouse pointer up and down a menu the highlighted part plays catch up with the pointer. It's slow but not as slow as you're describing. I've since moved to using Windowmaker until i get some new gear. Recompiling the kernel made a little difference though.
