This is for a PCI Radeon card. I had to do this.

This fix gives you hardware 2D acceleration and software 3D acceleration. in /etc/X11/XF86Config enter these two lines after the Identifier line under the Device section of your video card:

Option "ForcePCIMode" "true"
Option "nodri"

This should fix any problems that you were having with the radeon driver on a PCI card. The Device Section of for the card should look something like this:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Option "ForcePCIMode" "true"
Option "nodri"
Driver "radeon"
VendorName "Videocard vendor"
BoardName "ATI Radeon 7000"
VideoRam 32768

This is for a Radeon 7000; if you are using a different Radeon PCI card you'll have to change the VideoRam and BoardName options, but these will probably be set correctly from the install (mine were).

So I got the source for the latest release from www.xfree86.org and recompiled it on my box, overwriting the previous version. It now recognizes my vcard but the settings for my scren have been changed and now my moniotor doesn't support the sync rate (my monitor is a samsung syncmaster 753df...ironically...). now I'm trying to boot off linux to go and execute xconfig again, but as soon as the boot is over, X starts ( because it'sworking now), but the sync rate is not supported by my monitor, so I get a "SYNC OUT OF RANGE" from my monitor, so basically, I don'T have the signal going properly to my monitor. Now i'm not very good at troubleshooting compiling errors in the dark, so is there any way I could stop X from starting at login? (Boot switch like doze' F8 or something)
