linux is what you make of it - it's all the same basic kernel and utilities.

each distro differs in variances like package management or the particular initiation scripts that they use. what's best for you won't necessarily be best for me, but what's best for me isn't necessarily good for someone else.

btw, i like Gentoo Linux for its Portage system and the amount of useful information about the setup and everyday use of the distro that the developers and users made available on the Gentoo website. although the instructions for it are easy enough to follow, it isn't exactly designed with the amount of user-friendliness that, say, mandrake or redhat possess.

incidentally, there are several threads on this forum pertaining to this particular topic - have a look around, you'll find out a lot about the various distros that are out there. and don't rule out a BSD just yet, either. :)
