RE: A decent compromise to *nix and Windows is... |

![]() Ker Asmodai Been there, done that, it didn't work. MacOS X is directly descended from NeXT's operating systems. NEXTSTEP was (and still is) *the most* user friendly operating system known to man. NEXTSTEP was released during Windows 3.x's lifetime, and *should* have made a big impact. Unfortunately, the proprietry "black" hardware that NEXTSTEP ran on cost a fair bit more than your average desktop PC (a lot more, about $8k for a 33Mhz Motorola 68030 with 16Mb RAM and 400Mb SCSI HDD). This killed NeXT dead in the water. Now, MacOS X is impressive... very impressive... but, Apple's prices for *decent* hardware blows. I saw a lovely G4 with MacOS X... £2k - and the monitor cost was seperate to that, making the entire thing £4k. Impressive hardware, but I wouldn't want to pay that price - I could buy a couple of decent Sun Blade's for that ;) Also, please do not confuse MacOS X, MacOS X Server and Darwin. Darwin is the underlaying Mach-based operating system - a descandant of Mach3 that was used in NEXTSTEP, OPENSTEP and Rhapsody. MacOS X Server does not *officially* run on Intel. (iirc, there was a MacOS X Server x86 port, just like there was a Rhapsody DR1 x86 port, but I never ever found info on x86 OSX Server) Here's some screenies of NEXTSTEP and OPENSTEP (p.s. see if you can spot the visual elements that Micro$oft liked) http://ao.mine.nu/Screenshots/NX-Concurrence.jpg http://ao.mine.nu/Screenshots/NX-Diagram.jpg http://ao.mine.nu/Screenshots/NX-EnhanceMail.jpg http://ao.mine.nu/Screenshots/NX-FrameMaker.jpg http://ao.mine.nu/Screenshots/NX-OpenWrite.jpg http://ao.mine.nu/Screenshots/NX-ParaSheet.jpg http://ao.mine.nu/Screenshots/NX-TaskMaster.jpg http://ao.mine.nu/Screenshots/NX-TeX-Part1.jpg http://ao.mine.nu/Screenshots/NX-ThreeD.jpg http://ao.mine.nu/Screenshots/NX-VarioBuilder.jpg http://ao.mine.nu/Screenshots/NX-VarioData.jpg http://ao.mine.nu/Screenshots/NX-WetPaint.jpg http://ao.mine.nu/Screenshots/NeXTSTEP1.jpg http://ao.mine.nu/Screenshots/RenderMan.jpg p.s. It is a shame that NeXT died, those Lighthouse applications you see there are some of the best tools I have *ever* used. Also with the fact that NEXTSTEP and OPENSTEP use Display PostScript (meaning what you see on screen will match exactly what is printed), you get true stunning output. NEXTSTEP and OPENSTEP are the best hacker platform, and the best *user platform* (i.e. desktop) that you can get . p.p.s. Apple are a hardware vendor. If they port MacOS X to Intel, they'll loose hardware sales. Thats not in their interests. You may never see an x86 port of MacOS X. Darwin x86 is probably as good as you'll get. p.p.p.s. Mach has been open-source since its creation... Darwin is really nothing new. Mach3, Mach4, Lites, xMach, Mach-UX etc have been round a while :)
