2 ways. winxp automatically makes backups. not really the best method, but to restore you click on start->programs->accessories->system tools->system restore. This method asumes that you haven't formatted your box and that in the event that you need to restore data that your box actually boots and that you want to restore you entire file system.

the second is better and is the same way that ms has been doing it since windows 95. start->programs->accessories->system tools->backup.
this way lets you be incontrol of the backup and lets you schedule backups and write backups to tapes/cd/zip/nas/etc .. it's not the best solution in the world, but good enough for coming with the os and not needing to spend $$ on other solutions.
