based on the fact that you're or are going to be new to linux/unix-like os, good distributions for you would be:

Mandrake
SuSe
RedHat

Intermediate:
Debian
FreeBSD
Solaris

A little bit harder:
OpenBSD
Slackware
gentoo

This list is based on own experience, probably other share different point of views on this.
