Do I need a GUI in linux /more/

Cpt Vivacious Demon

I am setting up linux... and for whatever reason KDE won't install... I have tried almost everything... the mouse won't work, the screen won't show up... ect... (and i have done it before... what gives?) so... I am a complete beginer with linux... Do i need a GUI... I have heard i dont, i have heard i do. Whitch is true?
