...as Doeycall has pointed out, is joining a brigade. There are a few ways to approach this. First and foremost I'd recommend looking through the brigade tree located here, and seeing if there is a position that really interests you. Second, you likely want to check the posts on the first page of the recruiting forum located here, to see if there is a position offered that you are interested in. Last, you can visit the recruiting channel online CAIRC (#recruiting) and talk with the available C/Os.

Once you're in a brigade, you'll be awarded promotions based on your level of activity and involvement. Working well at whatever you've chosen to do will ultimately result in your advancing in ranks. For some general information on the promotion scheme, I'd recommend looking at the CyberArmy Manual; there is an entire subsection devoted to Promotions.
