Alright so this is what I'm thinking about. I have a p4 lga 775 2.8 processor. I didn't have enough money when I first built my computer so thats what I had to go with because it was cheep and it had speed. Now I want to get a pentium d 930 (3.0 ghz) processor, also a lga 755. I checked out the other dual core processors and they all cost more money then the pentium d that i want and they have less speed. Anyways I would like to know anyones experiences from the dual core processors with games. I've tried to look up on the web about it but I haven't been able to find anything that can really help me out. I wont just be playing games on this system because I'll be in school soon. If it helps my load out is: 2 sata 2 hdd, one 250, another 320. 1.5 gb 533 ram. 2.8 ghz p4 processor. msi p4m890m mainboard. 2 dvd burners. creative soundblaster live 24bit. 500w power supply. and a 7950 gt oc.

Well what can i say, DUAL Core is a nice thing but it`s only good if you run more programs at a time. DUAL Core is compatible with all games but not every game makes use of dualcore and erm well i don`t know if that makes sense u know... If u also do video editing and rendering things then dual core sure is good for you..

It is certainly worth buying anything else than pentiun D lol, otherwise it would be a vast waste of money considering what CPU you presently possess. I strongly recommend Pentium Core 2 Duo E6350 as it is the best low-end segment choice. Pentium D wouldnt boost your line-up much and moreover it is no good option for the future. Concerning dual/quad processors it will only be better, more and more software is going to be optimalized for multithreading and even now, as you said, while you are to use the computer for study purposes it is very probable that you will run several programs simultaneously which is, apart from other things, what multi-core processors are good for.

Ah, but getting a Core 2 Duo will mean getting another motherboard, possibly new RAM etc etc.

Having said that, you're going to see a maximum of 5% - 10% improvement in speed going from 2.8GHz single core to 3GHz dual core with the old P4 cores; I'd suggest that it's really not worth it.

You do usually see a benefit in games, even if the game itself isn't multithreaded - usually through the second CPU taking care of background OS tasks.

why would getting a core 2 duo mean getting another motherboard? i got a board that supports core 2 duo but i just didn't get the core 2 duo because they are soo expensive. i might get one next year when the price goes down.

OK, so I missed out the word "likely" - most P4 boards don't support the power requirements of a C2D. They also generally have DDR memory, as opposed to the DDR2 on boards designed specifically for C2D CPUs.

Unless the board was bought later than the CPU (or the CPU was really old when he bought the board), it's unlikely that it supports C2D processors...particularly since he clearly has a single-core 2.8GHz P4.

my old board supports c2d it was ddr2 at a low bus speed. i was cheap because i didn't have alot of money. i didn't really know about dual core processors until like three months ago. i just got something cheap and it said it was dual core so i just got it but now i know better lol.

Congratulations. Like I said, you're lucky. The chances of this guy having a board like yours are very, very small and he runs the risk of frying his shiny new CPU.

I'm trying to give some responsible advice here.
