Memory Issue

    Memory Issue [View] [Reply] [Top]

I noticed I couldn't remote into my computer from work today. I went home during lunch to check on it, and it was still at the login screen from when I turned it on in the morning. The mouse was still able to move, but the OS (Win XP) was frozen.

I tried restarting, and after being turned on for about 2-3 minutes, the OS froze up again. I did this a 2 more times, and experienced the same issue.

I've not yet had a chance to try booting into safe mode since I had to get back to work. I'm thinking that this could be a memory issue though, seeing how random this issue is. The power was fine, and like I said, the cursor could still move, but the underlying OS seemed to be stuck.

    Any other ideas/suggestions? Thanks.

      it is XP, after all.

If it's freezing up after you turn it on and while it's booting up, it's usually because the computer can't read something, which means it could be fragmentation or a bad HDD sector (though, the mouse usually will freeze or hang as well in those cases). I don't think it would be a memory problem, because if you're on the login screen, the computer hasn't really loaded anything that would be taking up that much memory, considering what XP uses already.

Assuming you can get the thing to start, try your basic maintenance procedures, but go through them all, and clear your caches before you do it. That might solve your problem. If not, move on to virus and spyware scans; a lot of times stuff gets in anyway and affects performance. Hardware is usually the last thing to check.

        Thanks, Halley.

Yeah, I'll start troubleshooting it more tonight. I'm not sure if it freezing at the login screen was a fluke or if it'll do it again. When I restarted, I logged in each time and within a couple minutes after, that's when it froze. It did not have a problem booting though, only after it was already logged into Windows (again, not sure if it'll freeze again at the login screen).

Thanks for the ideas.. I'll update after I check it out more thoroughly tonight.

Go into safe mode and see if the problem persists. If not, then you probably have a driver conflict of some sort. If so , then it could be hardware related.

Yeah, that's what I tried when I got home and it was working fine. I tried a 'Windows Repair' and it seemed to fail. I'm thinking that the hard drive may be starting to go so I'm going to re-install and move everything to a new drive tonight to make sure I can be operational. Then I'll worry about testing drivers, etc. later. Thanks :)
