If you write an academic essay the concept of it is pretty contradictory because they ask you to write in your own understanding yet they ask you to reference your work. This means that technically you are re-wording what someone else has already said and referencing back to it.

Journals and reports should be okay to write without references (unless you use statistics or quotes) as they are opinionated and are viewpoints etc.
