external hard drives don't crash any more than an internal one. they are exactly the same hardware.
i can see why you'd want to get an external one for extra space on your laptop, and there's nothing to really worry about with it.
the only reason that an external one would come to the end of its lifetime any quicker than an internal hd would be due to the abuse of the hd during transportation.
external hds tend to get beat up more because of their portability, thus causing physical problems to the drive. if you're using the drive solely for backup on your laptop, you shouldn't worry about it crashing or becoming damaged at all (as long as you dont take it with you to places and drop it all the time)

most hard drives now come with 5 year manufacturer's warranty, just to show that they most likely won't die :p if they do it'd be their fault. it's more of a reassurance thing really..
