It is certainly worth buying anything else than pentiun D lol, otherwise it would be a vast waste of money considering what CPU you presently possess. I strongly recommend Pentium Core 2 Duo E6350 as it is the best low-end segment choice. Pentium D wouldnt boost your line-up much and moreover it is no good option for the future. Concerning dual/quad processors it will only be better, more and more software is going to be optimalized for multithreading and even now, as you said, while you are to use the computer for study purposes it is very probable that you will run several programs simultaneously which is, apart from other things, what multi-core processors are good for.
