Alpha Maj ravn

from my reading - that drive has a LOT of problems with breaking for various reasons (both software AND hardware)

I hate to say it, but it seems that you might just need to replace it.

I've even found instances of other folks with your exact issue! Unfortunately, none of them have an answer beyond that knowledge base link you already posted
