Qustions on win32 PC preformance

This is what is have.

PCChip set mobo with a AMD 1.7ghz Processor

512mb DDR ram

60gb HD Running XP Pro
40gb HD

Broken CD drive (works half of the time will be replaced soon with a decent one)

Old ass 3D Image 4mb Trident Vid Memory card.

Now basicly what the problem is is the Vid card (obviously). I dont know to much about Video memory and where to allocate and how to adjust(most of that stuff is left to the gamers to tweeking their system to improve lack of and I dont game, but I do lots of heavy 3D graphics:)

What I need are tweeks that will allow me to posibly uses all the extra HD space and RAM to make up for the poor Vid card uintill I get a new one (It may be awhile)

Any ideas?
