win32 sound applications use win32 API to talk to the requred sound card, rather than direct hardware access.

Those API calls will use the default device (See Multimedia in Control Panel for more information on what device is default etc)

Some applications that support multiple devices will allow you to select which device does what (again, using API calls rather than direct hardware access). If your MP3 stuff doesn't do that, then there is not much you can do about it.

You might have had more luck buying something like an external mixer.
