I have never really been a big fan of the Republican party. On the political continuum, I am probably considered on the really far and radical left, which makes it difficult for me to like moderate Democrats sometimes. Obama seems to want to change the status quo in Washington. While this is a noble idea, I seriously doubt he will be able to change much. I think there is a disconnect between what he wants to get a accomplished and the reality of politics: any idea is debated, compromised and transformed beyond recognition. Any idea for big change is always widdled down into a moderate and maybe even ineffective one. This is the nature of democracy. However, I'm more closely aligned with him and his beliefs about a more open government and combating special interests. Corporations in this country have had far too much lobbying power. So much so that it has trumped what is in the best interests of the people.

Obama is an idealist, and some fault him for this. The key part of "Idealist" is ideas. The same families and politicians have been running this country and trying to perpetuate these same ideas and ways of doing things for the last 30+ years. It is wasteful, corrupt and doesn't work for the American people. Democracy is supposed to be a dynamic system that can adjust itself, but we are still making mistakes that we made 50+ years ago. We are still re-electing senators for decades and select nominees solely on name recognition. Why? Because we're scared of change? Some say he does not have the experience, but experience is not a requirement for the job: age and citizenship are. That is why there are cabinets: to advise the president on things he is not familiar with. His lack of experience could easily be compensated for by selecting a high quality cabinet.

McCain is just another old white man with the same ideas as the old white men that came before him. He doesn't really bring anything new to the table in terms of solutions to our problems.
