Summary
An interview with Ret. Mar DigitalDemon.
Body
First off, why did you retire?

I'm known to do things in the heat of battle that I normally wouldn't do, but right or wrong I live with the results. Prior to my retirement a lot was going on both in CyberArmy and in real life that didn't set well with me, so I quit. On reflection, I'm not sure if it was the right way to handle everything that was going on, however "Live by the sword, die by the sword".

Can you be more detailed?

Sorry, no, I can't.

You were an excellent brigade coordinator, a former brigade commander, and held a lot of positions within CA. Don't you miss it?

I'm not so sure about the "excellent" part, and I'm sure the majority would argue the point with you. Being older than most in CA I've been around. I've been in the U.S. Armed Forces, and I'm a businessman now, so I have very in-depth knowledge of what it takes to make a structured system work. Everything must have structure, be it an army, a business, or yes, even a community. I care nothing about drama or political correctness. I believe in action, so lead, follow, or shut up and get out of the way. To get back to your question, yes, sometimes I miss it. I've had a lot of great people work with me in CA, and I feel we did accomplish some good things.

Any possibilities that you may come back?

Well, I hadn't really thought much about it until about a week ago when a couple of people asked me if I would come back. Now I'm giving it some thought, and even talking to a person or two about it.

When would you do that?

I'm not sure, and it would depend heavily on the Executive Staff.

Where do you think CyberArmy is heading now?

That's a hard call; just when you think CyberArmy's about ready to flush itself, it pulls itself back up on the rim. All in all, it's doing better then most think, but nowhere near as good as it could be.

What about Staff and Exec? Are you happy about how they work and lead?

They appear to work rather well, but their leadership leaves a lot to desire. I have, always will feel, and know to be fact that you lead from the top down. Too many people in CA seem to be afraid to make the tough call, or are too worried about upsetting the apple cart. You have to break a few eggs to make an omelet.

Recently, Pengo was allowed to come back to the site, with a 'founder' rank, which leaves us undecided as to whether he will be on Staff or not. What do you think about this move?

I think it's a very good step in the right direction. I was in the mix when the blowup and split with Nick happened. What he did was wrong, but we always have to be willing to mend fences, and he did found CA, so he does deserve credit. I also think he should sit as an advisor to the current staff, it would go along way toward building a stronger CA. I'd also like to see the return of some other "disavowed" members, and who knows? Maybe with time it might happen.

There was also a proposal sent to Staff that ranks should be decided through points members earn through projects. How do you feel about that?

I think it's a waste of valuable time. There's nothing wrong with the current system, and people in CA spend too much time worrying about rank. They need to spend their time making a difference, and let rank fall where it falls.

What do you think about the current brigades? progress? OSI? CAU? CPC? SAS? SOS? zZine?

Well outside the fact there are still too many of them, they are doing OK.

OSI is always strong, barnseyboy has some great people, and he knows how to lead a group. CAU looks to be doing well, they still need to promote tulkas, and get him on staff, but they're swinging hard. CPC looks like it needs an overhaul, or at least one hell of a tune-up, but I'm looking at it from the outside. SAS appears to be doing very well, as it should. They had a good teacher. :-{)

SOS I'm not very familiar with, they were commissioned after I left, but I'm sure with xwyzard leading the group they are pulling their own weight. zZine, while it's not a brigade, I'm very happy to see it doing so well. Many of us fought long and hard hoping it would continue to grow, and become a regular publication.

How did you pass your time outside of CA? Any interesting stories?

I played a lot of golf, and bought another business.

We, at zZine, would like to thank you for your work for CyberArmy, and we would be happy if we would see you back again in action.

It's been my pleasure.

Anything else you would like to add?

I'd like to thank the people who've asked me to return. I'm not sure it can happen, but it's nice to know I'm remembered, and remind everyone that without structure the world would not survive, and there are no bad crews, just bad leaders.
