Military Casualties Question Resolve

Op-Ed
Summary
The deaths of several military personnel from the USA and Britain during actions in Iraq have caused people to ask themselves how sure they are of our involvement in foreign affairs, and how willing they are to let their countrymen die.
Body
In every war, there are always casualties, and this war will be no different. So far, the casualties have been at a minimum. Still, the deaths of a few seem to call into question the ethics of the many.

The crash of a CH-46 helicopter in which all 12 personnel died has caused people to ask themselves on how we will win the war. What they do not realize is that these 12 deaths are not the fault of the Iraqis.

There was no indication of hostile fire, Pentagon officials said, saying it appeared the helicopter went down because of some other problem, possibly mechanical.

The same problem occurred during America's War on Terrorism. The deaths there were from accidents involving heavy machinery, such as forklifts. This does not mean that their will not be any casualties. In fact, the opposite is quite true. As the fight continues, soldiers will be lost on both sides of the fight in increasing numbers.

This is apparent in the death of the first American soldier to lose his life by enemy fire: "A U.S. Marine was killed during the operation in was killed in action during the oil field operation, becoming the first coalition combat fatality of the war," Marine officials said. The death of a second Marine from a separate mission was reported later. Both Marines were part of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force.

The deaths of these men are expected, but still grieved over. We can expect the deaths of more of their comrades if the fighting continues. Still, people flock in support of the war. There will be more deaths, and the deaths of these first few force the general public to question their resolve. We must being willing to commit ourselves to completing this act.

Now is a time for steadfast determination, and the support of our troops. As Bush stated, "This will not be a campaign of half-measures." We can expect more military action soon, and more casualties as a result. Even if we do not support the war individually, we should at least support our servicemen and women unconditionally.
