| | Body | In an entertaining historical look at Subseven, which may be the most infamous trojan ever loosed on the Net, Gisterogue begins by telling us about a young hacker's search for the Holy Grail of the time: how to hack Hotmail. Despite receiving little help from the "posh butler" at Ask Jeeves, he manages to find Subseven and proceeds to learn about it by hacking Dad's computer.
The article contains some interesting excerpts from an interview with mobman, the author of Subseven, discussing the issue of responsibility for a program which has legitimate as well as malicious uses. There is a chronological list of releases, and descriptions of some of the features of what mobman describes as a "remote administration tool" ("R.A.T.").
If you lived through these days on the Net, you just may be ROFL as you read this article. If you came along somewhat later, look at it as a cautionary tale about opening files from someone in a chat or attached to e-mail from someone you don't know..
Is it a R.A.T. or a trojan? Read An analysis of a trojan - 'Sub7' and decide for yourself!
