This month's product review is Sophos Antivirus (by Sophos, of course). Sophos Antivirus is used mainly for corporate network protection in the United States. It is a good product for everything from small business networks to large corporate environments to maintain virus free servers and workstations. Other Sophos products include spyware, adware, and spam prevention tools, as well as firewalls, again geared for small business and corporate environments. Sophos is not something for use in a home environment because of its high price ($12,000 or more depending on what type of environment you are using it in).

Sophos is the world's first antivirus software to use Intercheck technology. Intercheck is an on-access scanner that scans files to make sure that they do not contain viruses. All anti-virus products do this, of course, but what makes Sophos different is that they use files called IDEs, a virus database (VDB), and identity files to aid the scanning process. Sophos checks for viruses by using strings of known virus code as well as MD5 checksums. The current version can detect over 110,000 viruses, even if they are brand new viruses in the wild.

Sophos also has a on demand scanner for manual scans of all hard drives on a computer or network. It takes a little bit of time to run a full system scan because it compares the checksums with the IDE and VDB, but it is worth the wait to ensure a virus free PC in a business environment where any downtime can cost anywhere from thousands to millions of dollars. The long wait can be considered a negative aspect of Sophos, but a positive is that it updates every hour or every however long you want. The next version of Sophos will have a few new features, like faster scanning of hard drives.
