Mario Power Tennis: Ready For A Bigger Challenge?

Summary
Everyone probably remembers the old tennis game from the original NES (Nintendo Entertainment System). It consisted of a couple of dorky looking people playing tennis with Mario as the official. In this new version for Nintendo GameCube, you get to play a
Body
Mario Power Tennis brings back all your favorite friends and foes from the different games that Mario has starred in. You can play as Mario, Wario, Luigi, Waluigi, Peach, Daisy, Yoshi, Koopa Troopa, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Boo, Shy Guy, Bowser, or Bowser Jr.

Each character has special offensive and defensive power moves that will help get to a ball out of reach or get you the win. All of the characters are unique unto themselves. Some have good all around ability: not too fast or too powerful, but also not too slow or too weak. Others can hit harder, but they run much slower. When choosing your character, the character will appear and their ability is shown below them. For example, if you play as Koopa Troopa, your best ability is your speed, but if you play as Bowser, your hitting strength will be higher. You just have to hope that you don't need to run after the ball.

There are three different modes you can play in: exhibition, tournament, and special games.

Exhibition games will allow you to test your ability on the courts as any character against any character. I would suggest starting off at intermediate. Although it is not much of a challenge, it will allow you to get used to the controls. There are also other ways you can play exhibition mode. Rather than just the regular court, you can do Ring Shot, which puts rings over the net that you have to hit the ball through. The smaller the ring, the higher the points. First person to get to 100, 200, or 500 points wins. The other mode is Item Battle. The power squares from Mario Cart 64 land on the net. Hitting the tennis ball through the square will give you the power that it has, ranging from banana peels to Koopa Troopa shells.

Tournament mode has two different tournaments, World Open and Gimmick Masters. World Open is held in Peach Dome. The only thing that changes is the type of ground you are playing on. Gimmick Masters is a tougher tournament mode, but you can unlock more courts to play in in exhibition mode. Gimmick Masters puts you on courts that have special features to them. For example, the Donkey Kong court has little alligators that will fall off the net when struck and attach themselves to you, which over time, slows you down.

Special Games is an odd little section. This is a series of challenges that range from hitting paintballs at a wall to paint a picture to hitting pictures of ghosts. This section, from what I have seen so far, doesn't unlock anything special. It just advances in difficulty as you beat the challenges.

The Ratings:

9/10 - Difficulty - This game can become quite hard, especially in the tournament modes.

9/10 - Graphics - Excellent graphics for a GameCube game.

10/10 - Game Play - This game is highly addicting. At least it is for me. :)

N/A - Story Line - No real story line to it. Therefore, I can't rate that part. :-P

Overall: 9/10
